Sweat It Out: The Best Wellness Spots Downtown & Beyond

Back to List

In these colder months, we could all use a little heat. When winter sets in, the city fills with places designed to make you sweat—whether that means turning the temperature up in a studio, disappearing into steam for a few hours, or committing to a class that leaves you fully worked out.

Some of these spots are easy to fold into a regular routine, right in the middle of downtown. Others require a bit more planning—a subway ride north or a short ferry trip—but feel worth it once you’re there. Together, they reflect how New Yorkers look for warmth this time of year: through effort, atmosphere, and the promise of leaving a little lighter than they arrived.

From high-energy workouts to heat-driven studios and spaces built for recovery, these are our favorite places to sweat it out—downtown and beyond.

Lit & Lean

Lit & Lean blurs the line between workout and night out. A roaming, speakeasy-style fitness concept, it pops up in rooftops, penthouses, clubs, and hotels across the city—Tribeca, Chelsea, NoMad—with seasonal appearances in Miami and the Hamptons. There’s no permanent address, which is part of the appeal.

Founded by DJ Liz, Lit & Lean’s signature method syncs sculpting and cardio bursts directly to beat drops. Classes unfold like a night out—pregame energy, peak moments, and a final wind-down—all experienced through silent-disco headphones. You show up to move, sweat hard, and leave feeling like you went out—minus the hangover.

Sky Ting Yoga

Founded in 2015 by Krissy Jones, SKY TING brings a distinctly downtown sensibility to yoga. The Soho studio is as considered as its classes—glass brick details, a beautifully designed interior, and luxe touches like Chanel products set the tone.

While mindfulness and traditional yoga still anchor the space, there are plenty of ways to turn up the heat. Hot yoga, hot pilates, Ballet Beats, and Dance Deliverance classes draw dancers, creatives, and a well-dressed crowd looking to sweat without pretense. A tucked-away sauna adds an extra layer of warmth for those who want to linger a little longer. Beyond the studio, SKY TING’s streaming platform extends its approach wherever you happen to be.

AIRE Ancient Baths

Hidden inside a restored 1883 textile factory on Franklin Street, AIRE Ancient Baths feels like stepping out of time. Inspired by Roman, Greek, and Ottoman bathing traditions, the experience centers on moving slowly between pools of varying temperatures—hot, cold, warm, salt—all beneath brick arches and candlelight.

Guests cycle through the baths at their own pace, with optional treatments ranging from salt scrubs to oil massages and wine baths. In AIRE’s low light, the New York winter can feel miles—or months—away.

CorePower Yoga

A downtown standby for a reason, CorePower Yoga offers a consistent, heat-driven approach that blends traditional yoga with strength training. Across formats like Yoga Sculpt, C2, and Hot Power Fusion, classes are designed to build endurance, improve flexibility, and leave you thoroughly worked out.

The rooms run hot, the sequencing is predictable—in a good way—and instructors tend to keep things moving. With multiple downtown locations and practical amenities like showers and locker rooms, CorePower is easy to work into a regular routine, whether you’re squeezing in a morning class or sweating it out after work. The appeal is its reliability: you know what you’re getting, and it always delivers.

Othership Flatiron

Othership combines sauna heat, cold plunges, guided breathwork, and live sound into a shared, immersive experience. Located in Flatiron, the expansive space is designed for moving between intense heat and cold, with structured sessions that emphasize both physical reset and mental focus.

Born from backyard ice baths during the pandemic, Othership grew into a community-centered wellness concept built around connection—sober-curious, screen-free, and intentionally social. Guests can choose guided sessions, self-paced free flows, or evening programming that feels closer to a gathering than a class.

QC NY Spa

QC NY Spa feels like leaving the city without actually leaving it. A five-minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan delivers you to Governors Island, where historic army barracks have been transformed into a sprawling, Italian-inspired wellness retreat.

With more than 20 thermal experiences—including saunas, steam rooms, relaxation spaces, and two heated outdoor pools overlooking the skyline—QC is designed for unhurried wandering. Day passes grant all-access, encouraging guests to move intuitively from space to space. The guiding principle here is dolce far niente—the pleasure of doing nothing, well.
