GUIDE TO THE BEST OYSTER HAPPY HOURS IN DOWNTOWN MANHATTAN

back to list

The sun has finally set on summer, when most New York restaurants have started to put away their outdoor seating, close out “Summer Friday” happy hour specials, and start to warm up their fireplaces. However, for those of us who would prefer to hold on to a taste of summer and the salty ocean air (or a crisp taste of rosé), we have a run-down of the perfect oyster bars with Happy Hour deals in downtown Manhattan.

Sel Rrose (1 Delancey Street, NY; T. 212.226.2510selrrose.com)

Recalling a rustic Parisian sensibility, Sel Rose is a Lower East Side go to for fancy cocktails and some of the freshest oysters. The space’s vibe is said to be a weathered grandeur of an old Lower East Side saloon with its vibrant history of dance halls and drinking dens. Their menu includes a seasonal offering of East and West coast oysters, a full raw bar and French-influenced main dishes. Daily happy hours are from 4:00pm – 7.00pm.

The Oyster Bar at The Roxy Hotel (2 Avenue of the Americas, NY; T. 212.519.6661roxyhotelnyc.com)

One of the star plates at The Oyster Bar at The Roxy Hotel is their three-tier plateau, an impressive tower of fresh oysters, clams, crab, mussels, lobster and ceviche. One dollar oysters during happy hour (Sun – Mon, 5pm – 10pm; Tue – Sat, 5pm – 7pm), draw in Tribeca locals, as does the bar’s resident pianist, Michael Garin, who plays at The Oyster Bar Tuesdays through Saturday. For those looking to spend a little extra time outside, the patio just outside of The Oyster Bar is sure to provide a nice late fall breeze.

The Clam NYC (420 Hudson St., NY; T. 212.242.7420theclamnyc.com)

Happy hour at The Clam (Mon-Fri 4pm – 6pm), is a favorite of West Village locals for its half price oysters and toothsome snacks like sea salt hush puppies with honey butter. Their punch bottles are popular too, like Cucumber Cooler with vodka, cucumber and mint or a Tipsy Palmer with bourbon, tea, lemon and mint.

Zadie’s Oyster Room (413 East 12th St., NY; T. 646.602.1300zadiesoysterroom.com)

This East Village oyster bar haunt hardly deviates from its intended purpose of serving great oysters and tasty things to drink. Most oysters are sourced from the East Coast from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine. They serve half and full bottles of sparkling wine, and a good selection of beers, fortified wines and even sake.

Bar Belly (14b Orchard St . New York City, NY; T: 212-464-8031; barbellynyc.com)

Bar Belly, a quaint bar located in the Lower East Side, offers a daily happy hour from 6pm – 8pm with $1 oysters, $3 beers, and $7 specialty cocktails — a great deal tucked away on. After the happy hour, stick around for live music and DJ sets by their resident DJs.

The Mermaid Inn (96 2nd Ave, NY; T.212.646.5870themermaidnyc.com)

Another East Village fish shack is The Mermaid Inn, whose menu serves much more beyond oysters, but they still play a prized role on the menu. Every day from 5pm – 7pm, East Coast oysters are only $1. Beers are $5 and there are $7 beers and $8 cocktails. The Mermaid Inn is also fairly kid-friendly, serving menu items like fish sticks, Old Bay fries and lobster mac and cheese.
