Cozy Cafés, Cult Drinks: Downtown's Best Coffee Spots for Summer

Back to List

In downtown Manhattan, you’re never far from a killer iced coffee. But the neighborhood’s best spots are so much more than a place to get your caffeine fix. From cozy, community-centric neighborhood institutions that have been keeping locals wired for decades to design-forward newcomers spinning vinyl behind the espresso bar, below 14th Street is packed with charming, indie cafés worth seeking out this summer. Cold brews, iced matcha lattes, yuzu slushes, and a few only-in-New-York creations are all on the menu right now, best enjoyed slowly at a sidewalk seat or a sun-filled corner table. Tip: Skip the TikTok-famous spots jam-packed with influencers glued to their phones and opt for something with a bit more soul. Stop by our downtown favorites below, from a Korean specialty shop in Nolita pouring Seoul-sourced pour-overs in handcrafted ceramic mugs to a shoebox-sized Allen Street hole-in-the-wall whose cult yuzu cold brew is worth the line out the door.

Dreamers Coffee

Opened in 2020 by Chinatown locals Daniel Lam and Sandy Truong, this Two Bridges joint is a total neighborhood favorite. While the sunlit, plant-filled interior is snug and feels like a hip friend’s living room, the outdoor seating is the real draw during the warmer months, putting you in a prime people-watching spot tucked just far enough from the main Dimes Square intersection. Summer humidity-friendly drinks include a powerful cold brew and a variety of iced lattes, including black sesame, hojicha, and matcha. The iced strawberry matcha latte is as picture-perfect as it is delicious. For an intense kick of caffeine and flavor, it’s all about the “Coke & a Dream,” espresso over chilled Mexican Coca-Cola. Wine, sake, and local beers are also on offer, alongside bites and pastries like croissants, matcha cake, and a fluffy egg sandwich with Kewpie mayo.

PARK at KIMS

Step into PARK at KIMS and you just might forget you’re in Nolita and not a coffee shop in Seoul’s hip Hongdae neighborhood. Opened in 2025 by four friends, this Korean specialty coffee shop is outfitted with a soothing, minimalist, blond-wood-drenched interior and floor-to-ceiling windows. Drinks are served in colorful handcrafted mugs by ceramicist Peter Shire, and vinyl is always spinning. The pour-overs are sourced from an impressive roster of mostly Seoul-based roasters, alongside Loquat, a Korean-American roaster in Los Angeles. Not a coffee drinker? Order the Chiya, a Nepali chai made from one of the owners’ family recipes, or their popular matcha. Looking for an excuse to order dessert before noon? Go for the summer special amaretto affogato, made with Il Laboratorio del Gelato, Psyche organic olive oil and nuts. Round things out with an espresso-glazed donut or a custard donut from East Village’s beloved C&B, or PARK’s housemade doenjang jambon beurre, a French ham and butter sandwich with Korean fermented soybean paste.

Blink, and you’d miss this shoebox-sized LES hole-in-the-wall on ever-bustling Allen Street. That is, if it weren’t for its butter-yellow facade and red door frame—and the frequent line that spills out onto the sidewalk. Opened in 2025 by a husband-and-wife duo, the wood-beamed enclave feels like a rustic-chic Greenpoint antique shop. In other words, it’s packed with vintage mirrors, quirky trinkets and objects, and racks of vintage clothing. The sometimes sold-out Yuzu Bright Brew, a double-filtered yuzu cold brew, is reason enough to visit. Don’t sleep on the summer specials either: the Passionfruit Guava Slush and the Grape Slush, described on the menu as “childhood in a cup.” The Red Bean Memory latte, made with red bean, milk, and espresso, is a sweet signature worth ordering any time of year. There’s no seating inside, but the mismatched vintage chairs out front are part of the charm.

Taikii Cafe

If listening to classic funk and soul records over a matcha latte in the Lower East Side sounds like your ideal morning, make your way to Clinton Street, where Taikii Cafe quietly opened in early 2026. Inside this narrow Japanese vinyl café, you’ll find a slatted wooden bench, a communal table, and floating wooden ledges lined with vinyl jacket covers, all centered around a turntable setup at the front counter beneath an angular light fixture. Menu highlights include organic matcha drinks like a kinako matcha latte, a hojicha latte, and a spicy matcha chai. There are also vegan pastries and an absolutely oishii selection of inari stuffed with ingredients like tuna mayo, edamame, hijiki salad, and avocado with scallion.

Ninth Street Espresso

If you’re looking for a no-nonsense, neighborhood-y spot where friendly baristas serve up some seriously good coffee, make your way to this Alphabet City institution, which opened its doors on 9th Street and Avenue C back in 2001. A handful of locations have popped up over the years, including the snug 10th Street outpost directly across from Tompkins Square Park, but there’s something special about the original spot. The interior is clean and unfussy. Think: white walls, a black tin ceiling, and a handful of tables. The menu follows the same simple philosophy: hot coffee, iced coffee, tea, and espresso with or without milk. Pair your drink with a C&B croissant and grab a seat inside or out. No power outlets mean the laptop crowd stays mercifully thin. Instead, expect locals quietly reading the paper in the morning and groups catching up over iced coffees in the afternoon.
