Take a Walk to 60 White in Tribeca and experience Keith Haring’s A World in Motion. Curated by the writer and journalist Carlo McCormick in collaboration with the collector and gallerist Lio Malca, the exhibition and the space itself are a skillfully presented labor of love. 

Born in 1958 in Reading, PA, Haring arrived in New York in 1978 to study at the School of Visual Arts. Love for Keith Haring runs deep, especially in Downtown New York City. He was a key player at Club 57 on St Mark’s Place — he hung at the Mudd Club on White Street where he curated the 1981 Drawing Show followed by a brief stint as the club’s doorperson as well as a short-lived busboy career at the original Danceteria. Haring’s instantly recognizable black-and-white subway chalk drawings soon began popping up in stations around town followed by the murals covering everything from handball courts to nightclub interiors. It was all just prelude to what would soon become a remarkable star turn, elevating Haring to the top of the art world while cementing his legacy in a way he might never have imagined. By the mid-to-late 1980s, Keith Haring’s work was already internationally known.

In the 1980s it was wild-time New York City and Haring quickly became part of a creative whirlwind that included Basquiat, Madonna and Warhol. It was also the height of the AIDS crisis and his social conscience helped immeasurably with both an awareness and understanding of what was happening. Lending a sense of gravity to his endeavors without losing any of the accessibility or humanity was an aspect of Haring’s activism, language and vision. Keith Haring was everywhere, and forty-odd years later he still is.

Keith Haring’s world occupies a rare and beloved place, not only in the art world but in all of our lives, whether we realize it or not. The black line drawings along with his use of both vibrant and Day-Glo colors—often dismissed as overly simple and cartoonish—present us with Haring’s unique ability to charm and communicate. There’s an easy exuberance combined with a more-than-meets-the-eye appeal, completely without pretense, as it speaks to time and place, while existing in the timeless realm of all great art.

The Haring exhibition at Lio Malca’s 60 White is generous in the sense of both vision and scale. Entering this new and welcoming space, we realize we’ve walked into a world that’s immediately recognizable. The intertwined and dancing figures, smiling faces and boom boxes, barking dogs and the spirit of Haring’s Radiant Babies are just part of what’s become the universal language that Haring uses to connect and engage. The entire mural from San Francisco’s Club DV8 is here, signaling Malca’s dedication to collecting, curating and presenting us with a legacy that can only be described as a remarkable gift that Keith Haring, who died in 1990 at the age of 31, left for all of us. This gift is the forever beauty of A World in Motion.
